MATCH PREVIEW: Whites v Wimborne Town

By Dave Todd

The Magpies of Wimborne Town make the Bank Holiday trip to the Ray Mac for our penultimate league match and our final home fixture of the regular campaign.

Saturday saw a thoroughly professional Whitesperformance overcome not only a Mangotsfield side whose slim play off hopes were ended but a typical end of season pitch where the grains of sand outnumbered the blades of grass in many areas.

The win was an important one as there were no slip ups from our play off rivals. Tiverton enjoyed a narrow victory over Winchester City, Levi Landricombe scoring the only goal of the game, to ensure Martyn Rogers’ side remain a single point behind the Whites in fourth place. Meanwhile, the shock of conceding an early goal at bottom of the table Bridgwater Town proved to be no more than a minor setback as second placed Taunton recovered to win 5-1. So, no change in the play off places and the tussle to gain home advantage therein.

The Whites were boosted at Mangotsfield not only by the goal scoring return of Justin Bennett, but the experienced Brian Dutton for his first match following an eleven game absence. Fingers crossed that after a horrendous season for injuries the treatment room is a little less crowded and Steve Claridge will have the rare luxury of a full squad to pick from in the business end to the season.

Our opponents are only playing for pride now as they sit in eleventh place in the table with 54 points. On Saturday they surprisingly went down 3-0 at home to Yate Town, their third defeat on the trot without scoring. However the Magpies do contain in their ranks Toby Holmes, who sits in fourth place in the divisional goal scoring charts, with an impressive 30 goals.

The previous meeting between the two clubs at The Cuthbury on 2nd January produced a narrow victory for the Whites as Justin Bennett scored the only goal of the game five minutes before half time.
